Visitors buy magic truffles in Amsterdam in one of two ways: over the counter in a smart shop, or online with delivery to an address in the Netherlands. Both are legal for adults. The choice mostly depends on how much time you have and whether your accommodation can receive a parcel.
Option one: a smart shop counter
Smart shops sell fresh truffles in sealed packs from a fridge. The advantage is speed: you walk out with them. Staff can explain the difference between strains. Take ID; shops sell to adults only.
What to keep in mind at the counter:
- Decide before you go in which strength you want. The choice guide lists strains from mild to very strong, using the shop's own descriptions.
- Buy for one session. A pack is usually 15 grams, a few strains come in 25 grams. Leftovers cannot go home with you (going home).
- Ask for a fresh pack with a clear date. Truffles are a perishable product.
Option two: delivery to a Dutch address
Ordering online lets you compare strains calmly before your trip. Dutch-Smart ships its truffles from the Netherlands in neutral packaging with no company name on the outside. According to its shipping page, orders placed before 16:00 on a weekday leave the warehouse the same day, and Dutch deliveries usually arrive the next business day, with a PostNL track and trace code (Dutch-Smart shipping).
For a visitor, the address is the part to plan:
- A rented flat or room. The simplest option if you are there during the day to receive it.
- A hotel. Ask first. Dutch hotels that work under the standard conditions of the hospitality association KHN are under no obligation to accept or keep goods for guests (article 5.4 of the KHN conditions), and a parcel at reception is not private.
- A PostNL pick-up point. Dutch-Smart offers delivery to a pick-up point. You collect the parcel there yourself, which keeps your hotel out of it.
Order with your travel dates in mind. An order placed on a Friday evening will not arrive on Saturday, and you want the pack in hand a day before you plan to use it.

Keeping them fresh in the city
Fresh truffles need a fridge. Dutch-Smart advises keeping the pack unopened at 2 to 4 °C until the date on the package and using it soon after opening. A slight blue colour where a truffle is damaged is oxidation of the psilocybin, according to the shop, and no sign of spoilage. Slime, a sour smell or mould mean the pack goes in the bin.
Most hotel rooms and rentals have a small fridge. Do not leave the pack in a bag in a warm room for days, and do not dry the truffles to make them last: dried truffles are in a legal grey zone (law).
What to avoid
- Street sellers. Amsterdam and Jellinek warn that street dealers in the centre often sell fake drugs and sometimes rob tourists (Jellinek). Truffles are sold openly in shops, so there is nothing to gain.
- Shipping to your home country. Truffles are a controlled drug in many countries. Order only to an address in the Netherlands, for use during your stay.
- Buying for the whole group in one go without knowing who will take what. Strength differs a lot between strains, and the person who has never tried truffles should not end up with the strong pack.
A one-line plan for this step
Pick the strength first, then the route: a shop counter on the day you arrive, or an online order timed to land at a Dutch address or pick-up point at least a day before your session. Then read where you can take them.
