Where to take magic truffles in Amsterdam, and where not to

A rented room, a hotel, a park or a canal boat: where visitors can take magic truffles in Amsterdam, what hotel rules allow, and the risks of water.

Updated

The best place for a truffle session in Amsterdam is a private room you have arranged in advance, where the house rules allow it, with a toilet, water and somewhere to lie down. Streets, parks, canal boats and anywhere near traffic or open water are the places to avoid. That advice has less to do with the law than with what four to six hours of altered perception do to balance, judgement and sense of direction in a busy city.

A rented flat or room

A short-stay flat or a private room is the most practical setting. You control the light, the music and who is there, and nobody needs to go outside. Before you book, look at the house rules of the listing: hosts set their own rules about smoking, guests and drug use, and those rules apply even to products that are legal.

Check a few practical things when you arrive:

  • Windows that open wide on upper floors in old canal houses. Keep them closed or nearly closed during the session.
  • Steep Amsterdam stairs. Plan the session so nobody needs to go up and down them more than necessary.
  • A fridge for the pack until the day itself (buying).

A hotel room

A hotel room works if the hotel allows it, and that is the hotel's choice. Hotels that use the standard Dutch conditions of the hospitality association KHN can add their own house rules, and guests have to follow them. Under article 5.2 of those conditions a hotel may end its services and ask a guest to leave if the guest breaks the house rules or disturbs the order in the hotel, without owing compensation (KHN conditions). Read the rules in your booking or ask at reception before you plan a session in the room.

Even where it is allowed, a hotel room is small and shared walls are thin. Keep the group small and the volume low.

Parks, streets and squares

Amsterdam's general bylaw bans openly using hard drugs anywhere in public and bans cannabis in public across an area of the old centre (APV, art. 2.7). Truffles are not named. That is no invitation. In a park you cannot control who approaches you, you may need a toilet urgently, the weather changes, and a calm moment can turn into confusion surrounded by strangers, cyclists and police. The city centre also has the street dealers that Jellinek warns tourists about (Jellinek).

Canals and open water

Water is the most specific risk of an Amsterdam trip. In and around Amsterdam, 145 people drowned in ten years, the highest number of any Dutch safety region, according to Statistics Netherlands figures reported in 2024 (NH Nieuws). Some of the victims fell in at night while urinating on the quay. A forensic doctor of the Amsterdam public health service described the risk profile to NOS: men, fairly young, drinking, in the evening or at night. About half of the water incidents that need emergency services happen on Saturday and Sunday nights between midnight and six in the morning, and the high quay walls make it very hard to climb out (NOS).

Truffles add to that picture. Jellinek lists problems with balance among the physical effects (Jellinek), and distances and edges are easy to misjudge. So:

  • No session on a rental boat, a houseboat deck or a canal-side bench.
  • No walking along unfenced quays during or after the session, especially at night.
  • Never steer a boat, the same way you never ride a bike.

Traffic, trams and bikes

Amsterdam streets mix trams, cars, scooters and fast bikes on narrow lanes. Riding a bike or driving under the influence is against Dutch traffic law (Road Traffic Act 1994, art. 8), and walking through busy traffic while tripping is risky. If you want fresh air later, wait until the effects have clearly faded, go with a sober friend, and pick a quiet street over the busiest routes.

Choosing a place: a short checklist

  1. A private room where the rules allow it, booked for the night after as well.
  2. Toilet, water, light food and a place to lie down within reach.
  3. Windows closed, no balcony session, no water nearby.
  4. Nobody needs to drive, cycle or go out until the effects are gone.
  5. A sober person who knows the address and has the help numbers.

With the place settled, read how to plan the session itself. If you are still choosing a strain, start mild (choice guide).
